The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has confiscated fake malaria drugs worth over N1.2 bilion in Lagos.
The agency made the development known through a statement released on its official X page on Friday.
According to the statement, the agency busted a warehouse in the Ilasa-Oshodi area, and found 277 cartons of the fake malaria drugs.
The statement reads partly, “NAFDAC has intercepted 277 cartons of counterfeit and unregistered Malamal Forte malaria drugs, valued at over ₦1.2 billion, in a warehouse located in the Ilasa-Oshodi area of Lagos State.”
In addition, the importer kept the unregistered products in a carton and labelled it as diclofenac potassium 50mg and illegally imported from Shanxi Tianyuan pharmaceuticals group in China. They also falsely declared the shipment as spare parts to avoid detection.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control Director-general, prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, while reacting to this, described the operation as part of a broader campaign to prioritize public health.
She said, “This seizure is part of NAFDAC’s sustained nationwide operation to protect public health and ensure only safe, quality medicines are available to Nigerians.”
Adeyeye reaffirming the agency’s dedication, with the support of the presidency and federal ministry of health, to eliminating counterfeit and substandard medicine from Nigeria.
She also explained that the agency has intensified its monitoring of ports and warehouse across the country.
Recall that recently, NAFDAC arrested an unlicensed chemical producer identified as, Ikechukwu Elijah in the Apo-Waru area of Abuja for manufacturing and distributing dangerous, fake and unregistered chemical.
