The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has received a strong endorsement from the National Assembly in its ongoing efforts to clamp down on the use of fake number plates across the country. The backing comes as the Corps recorded an alarming 7,798 arrests related to number plate violations within just two months.
The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on FRSC, Honourable Abiodun Derin Adesida, according to a statement the Assistant Corps Marshal, Corps Public Education Officer,Federal Road Safety Corps, Olusegun Ogungbemide, publicly declared the legislature’s support for the crackdown during a meeting with the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, and members of the committee at the National Assembly on March 18, 2025.
The meeting was convened in response to concerns over the increasing use of fake number plates, a development that poses serious security threats and challenges to road safety enforcement.
Addressing the committee, the Corps Marshal highlighted the dangers associated with counterfeit vehicle registration, noting that such illegal practices hinder security agencies from effectively tracking and identifying vehicles used in criminal activities.
“Our statistics show a disturbing trend where many motorists deliberately flout the law by using fake or unauthorized number plates. This poses a significant security risk and complicates efforts to combat crime,” Mohammed stated.
He reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to strengthening the National Vehicle Identification Scheme Portal, ensuring that no vehicle with an illegal registration is allowed on Nigerian roads.
The Corps Marshal also noted that the crackdown has faced resistance from individuals using fake number plates. However, he assured lawmakers that the FRSC remains resolute in its mission to sanitize the system.
“We have encountered serious pushback from vehicle owners caught with fake number plates, but this will not deter our efforts. The law must take its course,” he added.

Adesida, speaking on behalf of the House Committee on FRSC, commended the Corps for its proactive stance and pledged legislative support in addressing the loopholes that enable such illegal practices to thrive.
“We fully support the FRSC in this fight. The use of fake number plates is not just an offence; it is a national security threat. The National Assembly is ready to strengthen existing laws to ensure offenders are brought to justice,” he said.
The lawmakers also emphasized the need for public enlightenment campaigns to educate motorists on the dangers of using fake number plates and the importance of compliance with road safety regulations.
However, the Corps Marshal called on Nigerians to support the campaign against fake number plates by obtaining their vehicle registration through legal means and reporting any suspicious cases to the FRSC.
He expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for its commitment to road safety and national security and encouraged further collaboration in enforcing road transport laws.
“He appreciated the support of the National Assembly, describing it as a significant milestone in the battle against fake number plates. He beckoned on them to work with the FRSC by strengthening existing laws and regulations that will ensure that offenders are brought to justice”, the statement said.
