NBS reveals cooking gas price soars by 44.5% in less than 12 months

The National Bureau of Statistics has revealed the average retail price for refilling a 12.5 kg cylinder of  Gas in Nigeria. According to the bureau, the cost of a 12.5 kg cylinder rose from N14,261.57 in July 2024 to N20,609.48 in  2025.

The bureau on Tuesday described the cost as a sharp increase in energy expenses for Nigerian households.

However, this rising trend signals a worrying reversal, especially compared with June 2024, when cooking gas prices had actually dropped.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government had, over the years, implemented different policies in moves to tackle the soaring price. In October 2024, it stopped the export of locally produced cooking gas to prioritise domestic supply.

Justifying the decision, FG insists that the measure is intended to mitigate the soaring price of gas in the country. Meanwhile, the report notes a modest decrease, with the price dropping from N21,010.56 in June 2025 to N20,609.48 in July 2025.

According to NBS, the retail price for refilling a 5 kg cylinder decreased by 0.96% on a month-on-month basis. NBS reported that N8,323.95 was recorded in June 2025 and N8,243.79 in July 2025

In the state profile analysis, Adamawa has the highest average price for refilling a 5 kg cooking gas cylinder at N9,011.36. Similarly, Rivers ranked second with N9,005.00, while Taraba followed closely with N8,945.43, showing a clear regional trend in rising costs.

In contrast, Yobe recorded the lowest price with N7,612.00, followed by Niger and Nasarawa with N7,662.00 and N8,000.25, respectively. The NBS report is based on data collected from over 10,000 respondents across Nigeria’s 774 local governments.
