The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has confirmed the tragic passing of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who collapsed during an international bout at the ongoing Bel 7Star Energy Drink Professional Boxing League.
The incident occurred last Saturday during Week 15 of the league, leaving the boxing community in deep shock.
Olanrewaju, a former National and West African light heavyweight champion, was competing against Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu in an eight-round contest at the Imax Boxing Promotions event held at Bukom Boxing Arena. Reports revealed that he was leading on points before the unexpected turn of events.
According to eyewitnesses, Olanrewaju appeared dominant in the early rounds but suddenly leaned against the ropes in Round 3 (2 minutes 46 seconds) without absorbing any visible punches. However, the referee, Richard Amevi immediately stopped the fight and called for medical assistance.
Ringside physicians and paramedics from the National Ambulance Service promptly administered first aid before rushing him to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead 30 minutes after arrival.
Afrocover learned that GBA President Abraham Kotei Neequaye, who was present at the scene, coordinated with the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC) and local authorities.
In a statement, the GBA confirmed that the incident was reported to the Korle Bu Police Station, and Olanrewaju’s remains were moved to the hospital’s mortuary for preservation. Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, was also notified.
Olanrewaju, who was medically certified by the NBBC before the fight, had a professional record of 23 fights, with 13 victories (12 by knockout) and eight defeats. The GBA described him as “a potential world beater” who was delivering an impressive performance before his sudden collapse.
In a solemn statement, the GBA extended condolences to the NBBC and boxing fans worldwide, acknowledging the inherent risks of the sport:
“There have been several recorded deaths in the ring over the years. We pray to the Lord to protect all boxers during fights. Death is indeed unpredictable, and one never knows where it will strike.”
Tributes have since poured in from fellow boxers, fans, and sports officials, honoring Olanrewaju’s contributions to Nigerian and West African boxing.
“May the soul of Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju and all other boxers who have passed in similar circumstances rest in perfect peace.”
