No delay in student loans reimbursement, says UNILAG

The University of Lagos has refuted an online report about the delay of Nigeria Education Loan Fund NELFUND reimbursement to students. The management denied withholding the reimbursement of student who already paid their school fees before the university received the loan.

This claim was refuted by the University’s Head of Communication Unit, Mrs. Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, in a statement released on Thursday.

She said, “Refunds are typically processed after reconciliation and verification with NELFUND.

“So far, three tranches of NELFUND loans have been received by the university, and beneficiaries across the first two batches have been successfully reimbursed.

“For the third batch, which was received towards the end of April, we are currently collating and reconciling students’ payment details.

“The university management remains committed to its core values of transparency, accountability, and student-centered service delivery.

” We implore our students to take advantage of the NELFUND loan facility and contact the NELFUND help desk at our Student Affairs Division for prompt assistance and resolution on any complaint.”

Recall that the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, just last week confirmed that there was no fraud discovered in the student loan scheme while debunking the claims made by ICPC.

Note that this development came after the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) released a statement about commencing a comprehensive investigation into some anomalies surrounding the disbursement of the student loan.

The ICPC said that during its initial investigation, it discovered that while the Federal Government disbursed ₦100 billion for the loan scheme, only ₦28.8 billion was allocated to students, leaving ₦71.2 billion unaccounted for.
