The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Lagos State Government have joined forces to clear congestion at the Lagos Port Corridors. The NPA confirmed the move on Friday through a statement.

More so, the agency stated that it will work alongside the Lagos state government and other relevant bodies to carry out a three-day clear-up and sensitization campaign at the port. According to the announcement, the operation—NPA Security Clearance Operations 2025 will reduce security threats and environmental dangers at the ports in Lagos.

With the exercise, the agency intends to reduce the bottlenecks affecting the operations of the ports and aid their efficiency. Underlining the importance of the operation, the NPA said the congestion has prevented the ports from serving to its greatest capacity.

Additionally, the agency said the campaign will eliminate criminals, miscreants and hoodlums from the areas. Also, illegal structures like shanties, kiosks, and containers causing traffic along the port roads will be demolished.

The body emphasized that the presence of the aforementioned structures and individuals poses a serious threat to the safety of port personnel, cargo, and vessels. Hence, the operation will extend to entry points to the Tincan Island Complex, Lagos Port Complex, Kirikiri Lighter Terminals I & II, and other areas of the port.

Meanwhile, the state disclosed that the campaign conforms with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code measures designed by the International Maritime Organisation. According to the NPA, the regulations are to uphold the safety and security of ports worldwide.

Similarly, the Managing Director of the NPA, Abubakar Dantosho gave insightful details on the campaign. In his submission, the director labeled the roads and environs of the port as International corridors.

The General Manager, Security at NPA represented the MD and reflected that the agency will continue to work with key bodies to maintain good standards at the port. He opined that the ports contribute to Nigeria’s economy.
