The Nigeria Premier League (NPFL) returns today as football fever grips the nation, with fans set to witness top-flight action in 10 different venues across the country.
The spotlight will be on Abeokuta where defending champions, Remo Stars, face their arch-rivals, Rivers United, in the star match of the opening day. The highly anticipated encounter is expected to set the tone for what promises to be an electrifying season.
NPFL Chairman, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, speaking ahead of the kickoff, expressed optimism about the new campaign. “This season comes with renewed energy and competitiveness. The clubs have worked hard during the break, and with the inclusion of new teams, we expect a more vibrant and unpredictable league,” he said.
This season welcomes Kun-Khalifat, Wikki Tourists, and Warri Wolves from the Nigeria National League, who are eager to stamp their authority in the top division. Fans are particularly keen to see how these newcomers will challenge established sides.
In Umuahia, Abia Warriors will lock horns with Kano Pillars, in what many believe will be a tough, evenly-matched duel. Abia’s head coach, Bethel Orji, said his team is prepared to give their fans something to cheer about. “Starting well is important, especially against a big team like Pillars. We want to make a statement,” he told reporters.
Elsewhere, Wikki Tourists begin their top-flight return with a clash against Plateau United, while Katsina United square up against fellow newcomers Warri Wolves, in what promises to be an intense fixture.
New entrants Kun-Khalifat have a daunting opener against the illustrious Rangers International at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu. Rangers captain, Ernest Governor, sounded confident ahead of the match. “We respect Kun-Khalifat, but we are Rangers, and starting with a victory in front of our fans is non-negotiable,” he declared.
Also on the cards, Kwara United will meet an improved Ikorodu City, who are entering their second NPFL campaign, while El-Kanemi Warriors welcome Bendel Insurance to Maiduguri. In Ibadan, traditional giants Shooting Stars will host Bayelsa United, with both sides aiming to secure a strong start.
As the 2025/2026 NPFL season gets underway, excitement is already building among fans who are expecting fierce rivalries, tactical battles, and unforgettable moments on the pitch.
