In solidarity with its National President, Audu Amba, the National Union of Teachers (NUT) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike. The union made this revelation after holding its National Executive Council meeting in Abuja.
Accordingly, the union revealed it would go as far as embarking on a nationwide strike unless the Kaduna State government reinstall Audu Amba. NUT accused the State government of firing its President alongside 2,357 others for refusing to take the competency test.
The National Deputy President Kelvin Okonkwo bemoaned the decision of the government to announce the sack without informing the affected persons. He described the move as an act of intimidation and embarrassment on the Union.
Also, Okonkwo emphasized that the NUT won’t back out from ensuring justice. The Union further reaffirms its commitment to protecting teachers in the country. He faulted the decision of the Kaduna State government to fire teachers that fail the test instead of training them.
Okonkwo conceded that the competency test is the right development if it’s void of humiliating the Union. He argued that the State government had hidden agenda by sacking its members without prior notice.
Recall that this week the Kaduna State government announced the sacking of 2,357 teachers including the National President of NUT.
Despite lacking the jurisdiction to sack teachers in the state due to a pending motion of notice, the government fired members of NUT without notice. The decision has incurred the wrath of the association with threats of embarking on a nationwide strike until the government makes a u-turn.
