Historical Background
King Sikiru Kayode Adetona was the longest-reigning monarch, having ascended the throne on April 2, 1960. He was born on May 10, 1934, into the Anikinaiya royal house of Imupa, in Ijebu Ode, his father’s home.
The founder of the royal house of Anikinaiya was his great-grandfather, Oba Anikilaya, who reigned from 1821-1854. His paternal lineage, from the Royal House of Anikinaiya, traced ancestry to Olu-Iwa and Ọbanta, founders of the Ijẹbu kingdom.
The late king was unanimously chosen by the kingmakers, following Section 11 of the 1957 Chiefs Law in the Western Region. The then-governor approved Adetona’s appointment as Awujale of Ijebuland, followed by his official coronation on April 2, 1960.
The Ijebu kingdom is one of the most developed in the southwest region with a complex and highly organized government. The kingdom comprises several towns, extends into parts of Lagos State, and shares a boundary with neighboring Ondo State.
