The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected a new national president, replacing Emmanuel Osodeke, a Professor of Agriculture at the University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, who has held the position since May 2021.

A Professor of Medicine and Consultant Psychiatrist, Chris Piwuna, was announced as the new president after a keenly contested election during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held at the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State.

Piwuna, who previously served as the Dean of Students Affairs at the University of Jos, Plateau State, emerged victorious over his opponent, Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi State.

An official communique detailing the outcome of the congress and further resolutions is expected from the union on Monday.
