The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has announced it will begin full enforcement of barcode jackets for all commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators across the state, starting Monday, June 30, 2025.

The move, according to the agency, is aimed at improving rider identification, enhancing road safety, and boosting security across the state.

According to a statement on the official Facebook page of OYRTMA, on Saturday, the directive was given during a live radio broadcast by the General Manager of OYRTMA, Commander Ayoade Adeoye, who warned that any rider operating without the approved barcode jacket would be arrested and prosecuted in line with existing traffic laws.

“This is not a new policy, registration for the barcode jackets began three years ago, but sadly, many operators have deliberately refused to comply, the time for excuses is over. Enforcement begins this Monday,” Adeoye said

The barcode jackets are embedded with unique identification codes, which OYRTMA says will aid in tracking riders and deterring criminal activities involving commercial motorcycles, commonly known as Okada, and tricycles, popularly referred to as Maruwa.

Adeoye emphasized that the jackets are not just about traffic regulation but are also a part of the state’s security strategy.

“These jackets are fitted with barcodes that help us monitor activities and trace riders when necessary. It’s about protecting lives and properties, not just enforcing the law,” he added.

Operators who are yet to register are directed to proceed immediately to the Oyo State Secretariat for documentation and collection of their jackets.

Meanwhile, the OYRTMA called on all commercial operators in the state to take this directive seriously, stressing that the safety of passengers and road users depends on strict adherence to regulations.

The statement reads: The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), under the leadership of the Executive Chairman, Major Adesagba Adekoya (Rtd) has announced the commencement of enforcement of barcode jackets for all commercial motorcycle (Okada) and tricycle (Maruwa) operators across Oyo State.

This enforcement takes effect from Monday, 30th June 2025, as declared publicly by the General Manager of the Authority, Commander Ayoade Adeoye, during a radio broadcast.

The barcode jacket contains security features, including a unique barcode for identification and tracking purposes. It is mandatory for all commercial riders to wear it while operating on public roads.

All Okada and Maruwa operators without a barcode jacket are directed to immediately proceed to the Oyo State Secretariat to register their vehicles and collect their jackets.

This registration has been ongoing for the past three (3) years, yet many riders have failed to comply. No excuses will be entertained after enforcement begins. Unregistered riders will be arrested and prosecuted in line with the traffic laws of the state.
