The Nigeria Police Force has launched disciplinary action against some of its officers seen in a viral video receiving cash from a Chinese national, describing their conduct as “unprofessional and unethical.”

The footage, which surfaced on social media earlier this week, drew public outrage as it showed uniformed police officers collecting what appeared to be a bundle of naira notes from a foreign national.

The video has since sparked conversations about corruption and misconduct within the force, prompting an official response from the police authorities.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, condemned the action of the officers, stressing that their behavior does not reflect the values and standards upheld by the Nigeria Police Force.

“The Nigeria Police Force has taken cognizance of a disturbing video making rounds in the media space, showing police officers receiving money from a Chinese national.

The Force has strongly condemned the conduct exhibited by the police officers in the video, describing it as unprofessional and unethical,” the statement read in part.

According to the police spokesperson, the officers involved have been identified and are already undergoing internal disciplinary proceedings. The Force assured Nigerians that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy for any form of misconduct capable of eroding public trust.

“The actions of the officers do not represent the established ethics, standards, and core values of the Nigeria Police Force,” Adejobi stated.

“The Force has zero tolerance for such unprofessional behaviour and other forms of misconduct, which undermine public trust and confidence.”

Beyond addressing the erring officers, the Police also issued a stern warning to individuals and organizations who engage the services of police personnel, particularly as escorts or guards.

The statement further advised against any actions that could compromise the integrity of the Force.

“The Nigeria Police Force hereby cautions individuals and organizations privileged to the services of Police personnel, particularly as escorts and guards or other specialized services, to desist from any act capable of degrading the integrity of its officers and bringing the Force to disrepute,” it added.

Meanwhile, the names of the officers involved and further details of the disciplinary process are yet to be disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
