The National Working Committee of the People Democratic party, the committee members have passed a vote of confidence on the acting national chairman. This was done in view of the party NWC meeting slated for Thursday 18th of April, 2024.
This was confirmed in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba on Wednesday. According to Ologunagba, the NWC made a unanimous decision to retain confidence in the leadership of the acting chairman of the party Umar Damagum.
Also, the committee commends the activities of the acting chairman in his effort and commitment to stabilize and reposition the PDP as the main opposition Party in the country.
The NWC meeting of the PDP was held at the National Secretariat on Tuesday in Abuja, with the motion of confidence presided over by the Deputy National Chairman (south) Amb Taofeek Arapaja, and a move of motion by the National Vice Chairman (southeast) Chife Ali Odefa, seconded by the National treasurer Hon Yayari Mohammed.
The party’s National Executive Council meeting is slated for Thursday, and the purpose of the meeting is to either affirm Mr Damagum as chairman or appoint a replacement.
Meanwhile, it was reported in the early hours of today that the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja was flooded with protesters. According to the reports, the protesters were those in support of the acting national chairman of the party Umar Damagun and the minister of the FCT, mister Nyesom Wike.
However, in reaction to the anticipated National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Thursday, Prince Uche Secondus, a former national chairman of the Party has urged party leaders to curb the continuous use of the party by the former Rivers state governor Nyesom Wike to maintain relevance in the Bola Tinubu administration.
The former PDP Chairman, in a statement through his media adviser, Ike Abonyi told PDP leaders that Wike’s romance with the ruling party should not distract them from proving that no individual is bigger than the party, adding that the FCT minister’s political fame is now drowning.
Secondus claims that the former Rivers State governor is trying hard to create a non-existent crisis in the party to make himself relevant before his boss, President Tinubu, who he said to be getting fed up with his nuisance of bringing politics into the governance of the FCT.
He continues by adding that Wike has managed to create an impression that he is in a tussle of supremacy with the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the party and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and trying to give the impression that he is a factor in PDP and holding it for his APC interest.
He further charged the party leaders not to fall for Wike’s trick by giving him undeserved relevance which he no longer possesses.
Recall that after the suspension of the former chairman, Iyorcha Ayu in 2023, Mr Damagum was appointed as the acting chairman and will oversee the first national working committee meeting in 2024.
