Benue state residents have taken to the streets to protest the rising attacks on the Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area of the state. The recent attack has claimed the lives of three people and left three others injured.

Recall that on 13 June 2025, unidentified gunmen attacked the Yelwata community at midnight, resulting in the killing of about 200 people.

The protesting residents on Monday barricaded the Makurdi/Lafia/Abuja federal highway, leading to a traffic gridlock on the route. According to reports, the demonstrators also displayed the bodies of the deceased at the protest ground.

In a phone conversation with newsmen on Monday, a youth leader, Achii Mathias explained that the perpetrators attacked about 7am on Monday. He alleged that the attackers might have slept in the community judging by the time of the attack.

Furthermore, Mathias noted that the residents are agitated because the perpetrators despite the immense presence of security men in Yelwata and its environment, attacked the community.

He added that the Security Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia and the Chairman of the affected local government area were already at the gathering to assess the situation.

Meanwhile, when contacted, the Special Adviser to the Benue state governor on security and internal affairs, Joseph Har confirmed the death and injury of the reported victims in the attack. He further ascertained that the unknown perpetrators attacked a community close to Yelwata.

However, the Benue State Police Command’s spokesperson, Udeme Edet has promised to provide information about the case to the media and public soon.
