Due to the congestion and unconducive state of correctional facilities across the country, the Minister for Interior, Rauf Aregbeshola has called for the swift trial of inmates.

The minister cited the delay in trials of inmates as the reason for the growing burdens on correctional facilities across Nigeria. Rauf Aregbeshola made this revelation while speaking at a conference with senior officers in Sokoto.

Aregbeshola opined that the timeframe for the investigation and trial of suspects should be within a year. He argued that the sluggish process of trying suspects has led to congestion.

Furthermore, The Minister for Interior also stated that speeding up the trial of inmates will save the government a fortune. According to him, the centers will be able to cater properly to inmates if the facilities are not congested.

Rauf Aregbeshola conceded that truly some facilities in the country need urgent attention. He decried the state of some facilities across the country, tagging them “unlivable” for humans. However, Aregbeshola beseeches personnel to work with host communities to improve the standard of the facilities.
