The Federal Road Safety Corps on Tuesday, joined forces with the Fire Service to contain a burning gas truck at Otedola bridge around Ikeja, Lagos.
The FRSC Spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemidebe, disclosed that rescue operatives’ prompt action prevented further destruction and potential fatalities.
The accident according to the report, occurred during peak traffic hours, involving 11 male adults with five injured and two fatalities. According to speculations, a brake failure resulted in the incident, which caused a huge traffic jam.
Punch reported that a total of 15 vehicles suffered in the collision at Otedola Bridge on the Lagos Ibadan expressway. Meanwhile, FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed concern over the incident and reiterated the importance of adherence to safety protocols.
Mohammed warned fleet managers, vehicle owners and drivers to prioritize safety protocols to avoid such incidents. He reiterated that whoever violates the rules and protocols will face sanctions under the National Road Traffic Regulations.
Mohammed thereafter urged the public to remain alert and report any emergencies to the FRSC through their emergency free line, 122.
The gas truck explosion which occurred around 7pm destroyed two buildings including a Redeemed Christian Church Parish and four vehicles. The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that the fire started after the truck accident.
The Director disclosed that the 30-tonne gas truck with no registration number went up in flames while navigating its way. She added that they reported no human casualty at the time of sending the statement.
Early last month, a seven-story commercial building located in the Iddo area of Lagos island reportedly went up in flames. Punch reports that the fire which started Around 10 am was caused by the archival room of the building.
