Six undocumented Nigerian migrants have been intercepted by the Abu Najim Police Department in Sirte, Libya, while allegedly being smuggled by a Libyan driver and his mother.
The arrest took place on Sunday, August 17, 2025, during a routine patrol in the Sirte area, according to Migrant Rescue Watch (MRW), an organisation monitoring migrant movements.
In a statement released on Monday, MRW disclosed that the suspects were transporting the Nigerians in a vehicle before they were stopped by officers.
“Abu Najim Police Dept. (Sirte) seized a vehicle and arrested a Libyan driver (‘A.M.M.’) accompanied by his mother for attempted human smuggling of six undocumented migrants of Nigerian nationality. All referred to competent authorities for legal action,” MRW said.

Authorities confirmed that the vehicle was confiscated while the six Nigerians, alongside the Libyan driver identified by his initials A.M.M. and his mother, were all taken into custody. They have since been handed over to the appropriate legal authorities for prosecution.
Libya remains a key transit point for migrants hoping to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. However, the country continues to grapple with persistent cases of human smuggling, leaving many migrants exposed to detention, exploitation, and grave risks along the journey.
