A tanker driver lost his life in a fire accident that occurred along the Oko-Olowo-Jebba Expressway in Kwara State on Friday. The Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed that the accident happened around 9:24am.
He disclosed that the tanker with 33,000 liters of fuel collided with a fertilizer truck, resulting in a fuel spill that sparked the fire. Adekunle added that firefighters took action to contain the fire, saving the fertilizer cargo.
The report indicated that the inferno started when the fertilizer truck struck the rear of the tanker leading to a fuel spill. Unfortunately, the truck driver lost his life as he was trapped in the burning truck.
Meanwhile, The Director of Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John urged all road users to be cautious on the highway. John beseeched road users to adhere to safety measures and prioritize road safety to prevent such tragic incidents.
Tanker explosions have become a rampant issue of late forcing the Federal Government of Nigeria to consider taking action. Recall that in January, reports disclosed a tanker accident that killed more than 18 people, while injuring 13 others.
The deadly accident occurred along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in Udi local government of Enugu State. According to reports, the incident happened around 11:30 am when a fuel tanker collided with a water truck while descending a hill.
The Spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps, Olusegun Ogungbemidebe, said the crash involved a petrol tanker, and cars, among others.
