Nigeria again dominated the conversation as the long-awaited 67th Grammy ceremony was held in the crypto.com arena, in Los Angeles, US on Sunday. More so, the Nigerian female artiste, Temilade Openiyi won the award with her major single “Love Me Jeje”, a song originally owned by Seyi Modimu.
In the 67th Grammy ceremony, renowned Nigerian singer, Tems won her first individual award at the gala night. More so, Tems beat other popular Nigerian artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, Lojay, Asake, and Yemi Alade to clinch the best African music performance.
As revealed, the category first debuted in 2024 with South Africa’s Tyla winning the inaugural edition. The recent triumph earned the Nigerian singer her second Grammy award recording eight (8) nominations in total.
Recall that in 2023, Tems won her first Grammy award in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category for featuring in “Wait For You” by popular American rapper, Future.
By clinching the award, Tems made history as the only Nigerian artiste to win a prize at the 67th Grammy Ceremony. Similarly, Tems became the first Nigerian and female artiste from the West African country to win the category.
Although other notable Nigerians like Sade Adu, Sael, Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Sikiru Adepoju, have all won the award in the past, Tems is the only Nigerian to win an award at the 67th edition.
While giving her acceptance speech, Tems acknowledged how God’s support earned her the award. She disclosed that the award will further help her celebrate her mum for her recent birthday and commitment towards her career.
However, Tems is currently enduring serious backlash for her acceptance speech. During the speech, the singer failed to attribute the original owners of the dubbed song that won her the award. In 1997, Seyi Sodimu first released Love Me Jeje off his studio album titled, Afro Soul.
