President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Muhammad Babangida, son of former military president Ibrahim Babangida, as the chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA), in what appears to be part of his administration’s move to reposition key institutions in the country.

The appointment was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Babangida son’s appointment, alongside others to lead various government agencies, takes immediate effect.

Babangida, 53, holds a degree in Business Administration and a master’s in Public Relations and Business Communication from the European University in Montreux, Switzerland.

He also completed the Executive Program on Corporate Governance at Harvard Business School in 2002.

The President also approved the appointments of other prominent Nigerians into leadership roles in federal agencies, including those in the oil and gas, education, power, and trade sectors.

The move, according to Onanuga, is aimed at strengthening governance and efficiency across these institutions.

“The President expects the appointees to bring their experience and expertise to bear in their respective positions to further the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Onanuga stated.

Other appointments

The statement also named eight other appointees to various federal agencies including; Lydia Kalat Musa (Kaduna State), Chairman, Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority (OGFZA), Jamilu Wada Aliyu (Kano State), Chairman, National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).

The appointment does not exclude Prof. Al-Mustapha Alhaji Aliyu (Sokoto State), Director-General, Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa (DTCA), Sanusi Garba Rikiji (Zamfara State), Director-General, Nigerian Office for Trade Negotiations (NOTN)

In addition, Mrs. Tomi Somefun (Oyo State) was appointed Managing Director, National Hydro-Electric Power Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), and Dr. Abdulmumini Mohammed Aminu-Zaria (Kaduna State), Executive Director, Nigerian Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC).

The appointments are expected to reposition the institutions involved and align them with the administration’s development goals across key sectors.
