The president of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, has refused to sign the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) bill into law. This was contained in a letter read in the green chamber during plenary on Thursday.
Tinubu, citing the amended 1999 constitution, disclosed that the law allows the agency to keep part of drug crime proceeds. According to him, this move by the NDLEA is in direct contradiction with the existing financial rules and regulations.
The president continued that currently, crime proceeds are paid into the government’s confiscated and forfeited account. He stated that dispensation to any agency including the NDLEA can only be made through the president’s approval.
Tinubu emphasized that there is no credible reason to change a process formulated to uphold accountability and responsibility.
