The United States (US) has promised to boost its relationship with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to combat cybercrime.
The US ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills (Jr.) stated in Abuja on Tuesday while visiting the Executive Chairman of EFCC.
Mills noted that the US government has always maintained a robust working relationship with EFCC since the establishment of the latter. He explained that one of the reasons for this collaboration is the shared vision for improving the economy and creating a secure and prosperous country.
Additionally, Mills communicated his interest in learning about the initiatives employed by the commission in addressing financial crimes. The ambassador further reassured the commission that the US government would assist with information, and expertise including cooperation on specific cases.
While receiving the delegates led by Mills, the EFCC chairman, Ola Olukoyede also attested to the mutually beneficial relationship with the US.
Olukoyede explained that the commission is not only committed to preventing economic and financial crimes but also fighting them. This includes investigation, prosecution, and recovery of assets subject to management by the directive of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
In addition, he disclosed the establishment of the Visa Application and Immigration Fraud Section in the EFCC to curb immigration fraud that poses an endless challenge to foreign missions in the country.
Furthermore, the EFCC boss called for enhanced support specifically in the areas of technology, intelligence sharing, and human capital development. He also appealed for prompt response to requests made to the US government.
Olukoyede concluded that the Nigerian government is open to fostering collaboration with the US for the mutual benefit of both countries.
