The Benue State government, yesterday, conducted a mass burial for 17 victims of the recent armed herdsmen attack on Mbakyor community, Mbalom Council Ward of Gwer East Local Government Area of the state.
Recalled that on the night of March 7, 2024, armed herdsmen attacked Mbaikyor community. During the attack, the herdsmen murdered 19 persons, including a retired Army Officer and a boy.
Meanwhile, two of the victims were earlier buried as the corpses were said to be fast decomposing due to the gruesome manner they were murdered. The governor assured that his government is working round the clock to tackle the security challenges facing the state.
Also, he went on to urge all stakeholders in the state to cooperate with the government in tackling the security lapses in the state. Additionally, the lawmaker representing Gwer East of Benue State House of Assembly, Elias Audu has called on the security operatives to put more effort in combating insecurity.
The lawmaker showed concern that despite the availability of attack helicopters to tackle such threats, security agencies did not live up to their responsibilities. Reports indicated that the attack lasted over three hours without the intervention of security operatives.
President, Masev Development Association, MDA, Prof. Vitalis Tarhule stated that the primary responsibility of government is the protection of lives and property. He went on to appeal to the government to endeavour to protect the people.
