Four workers dies in Bauchi water plant tunnel accident

The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed a tragic incident which led to the death of four workers at the Gubi Water Treatment Plant in Bauchi.

This tragedy was confirmed to newsmen on Sunday by the spokesperson of the command, Ahmed Wakili.

Mr Wakili noted that the incident happened inside the plant’s tunnel during a sludge cleaning operation.

He noted that four victims including, Shayibu Hamza (48), Abdulmalik Yahya (29), Jamilu Inusa (29) and Ibrahim Musa (42) were involved in the tragic incident.

According to report, the victims were all residents of Firo Village in Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi.

Mr Wakili added that the victims had entered a clarifier to remove pit pipes when the tragic incident happened.

He said, “They were retrieved unconscious from the tunnel and rushed to the Specialist Hospital, Bauchi, where they were later confirmed dead.

“Police personnel were swiftly deployed to the scene as investigation into the cause of the incident commenced.

“The management of the water treatment facility is said to be cooperating fully with the authorities to ensure a thorough review.”

Additionally, Wakili emphasized on the importance of strict safety precautions in such high-risk environment.

He added that “safety must be non-negotiable in operations like this.”

He encouraged the management and workers of the industry comply strictly with established safety protocols.

Wakili further stated that the commissioner of police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu has offered sympathy on behalf of the command to the victims families, colleagues and management of the plant.

The commissioner also reaffirmed the responsibility of the police to enhance safety protocols to avoid such occurrences in the future.
