The Lagos State Government has called on teachers to incorporate critical thinking and problem-solving skills into their teaching methods to meet the demands of 21st-century education.
Chairman of the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs. Victoria Mopelola Peregrino, made this appeal while inaugurating a two-day capacity-building workshop for 300 teachers on Grade Levels 13 and 14.
The training, themed “Assessment and Evaluation: Designing Assessments That Promote Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving for Experienced Level Teachers (GLs 13-14),” commenced on Monday at the Teaching Service Staff Development Centre (TSSDC), Owutu, Ikorodu.
Mrs. Peregrino stressed the need for continuous learning among teachers, noting that modern teaching techniques have evolved beyond traditional methods. “Teachers must keep pace with global standards if they are to remain relevant and successful in the profession,” she said.
Highlighting the state’s commitment to quality education, she explained that the Lagos State Government recognizes the importance of equipping educators with essential skills that address current classroom demands. “Experts have warned that many classrooms today lack critical thinking and teaching skills necessary for the 21st century. Our teachers must be prepared to bridge that gap,” Peregrino stated.
The workshop aligns with the Education and Technology pillar of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda. Mrs. Peregrino expressed gratitude to the governor for his consistent investment in the professional development of teachers, emphasizing that such initiatives are crucial for improving teaching standards across the state.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of TESCOM, Mrs. Oyekan-Ismaila Adebopo, explained that the training aims to enhance teachers’ ability to design assessments that promote critical thinking and problem-solving among students in public secondary schools.
Board members of TESCOM, including Mr. Abiodun Gbamgboye, Mrs. Kafayat Ajenifuja, and Mrs. Abimbola Adeola Idowu, encouraged participants to maximize the training opportunity. They urged teachers to adapt to the evolving educational landscape, reminding them that dedication to self-improvement yields long-term rewards.
However the workshop is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
