In a bid to promote better health among people with disabilities (PWDs), the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has organized a seminar to raise awareness on the importance of oral hygiene.

The event, held on Monday at the STO Resource Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, was themed “Oral Health: A Key to Cardiovascular Health.”

It aimed to educate participants on the connection between oral hygiene and overall well-being, particularly the link between oral health and heart conditions.

Speaking at the event, the General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, highlighted the critical health challenges often faced by individuals with disabilities. She emphasized that poor oral hygiene can lead to severe complications, underscoring the importance of the initiative.

“Many people are unaware that oral health is connected to brain functions,” she said. “Some of our special children lack the muscular strength to brush on their own and require occupational and physical therapy. Unfortunately, many of them live with poor oral hygiene.”

Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal stated that the seminar, which gathered about 200 participants, was designed to equip attendees with the knowledge and tools necessary to improve oral care practices. She noted that approximately 100 children with disabilities received free dental assessments, including on-the-spot scaling and polishing.

She further expressed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to sustaining and expanding such initiatives. “Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration will continue to create awareness and provide solutions that ensure healthier futures for all, including persons with disabilities,” she assured.

Guest speaker at the event, Dr. Funmi Adeniyi, stressed the importance of regular dental care, recommending brushing at least twice daily, flossing, and visiting the dentist biannually. She also encouraged parents and caregivers to promote healthy habits, such as drinking water regularly and consuming more fruits and vegetables.

“To prevent oral diseases, make tooth brushing a fun and engaging activity for children,” Dr. Adeniyi advised, adding that seeking dentists specialized in treating PWDs is crucial.

Participants received free oral care items, including toothbrushes and toothpaste, along with practical tips for maintaining proper oral hygiene.
