Reports from media on deployment in the last 12 months have revealed that up to 640 military personnel from Nigeria are on peacekeeping missions. This figure comprises personnel of the Nigerian Army serving in different countries across Africa.

Also, a breakdown of this figure indicates that there are 205 troops from Nigeria in the Gambia. 173 in Guineas Bissau, 62 in Mali with others in some neighboring countries.

However, This development has received stern backlash from citizens and security specialists in the country. They argued that despite the decaying security situation in Nigeria, the FG isn’t worthy to send troops out.

Recall that Nigeria has been battling numerous security deficiencies for decades now. Recently, the heat has intensified more with various killings and abductions across the country.

Furthermore, within the first quarter of 2022 close to 323 security personnel and 2,968 have been killed. While over 1,484 were kidnapped. The height of insecurity has been raised with the operations of Fulani Herdsmen, Bandits, IPOB agitators, Boko Haram and ISWAP.

Lastly, there are concerns about the state of security with the raising tension about the 2023 general elections. Secession, Religious and Tribal disputes are heavyweight contributors to the tension.
