Senate approves 300% salary increase for CJN, other judicial officers amidst labour wage protest

The Nigeria senate on Wednesday, approved a bill that grants a 300% salary increment for Judicial Officers in the country

President Ahmed Tinubu adopted an executive bill  providing new salaries and allowances for the judiciary sector after which the bill was approved .

The President Further said the bill will will set new higher allowance and benefits for the judicial workers.

The bill passed by the president is titled “A Bill for an Act to Prescribe the Salaries, Allowances and Fringe Benefits of Judicial Office Holders in Nigeria and for Related Matters”.

NEW SALARIES

According to the bill, the CJN gets a Monthly salary of  ₦5,385,047.26, while the justice of Supreme Courts will be earning, ₦4,213,192.54 

President of the court appeal gets ₦4,78,415.78 monthly Also, justices of the Court of Appeal will earn ₦3,726,665.40

The top judges like chief Judge of the Federal High Court and President of National industrial court are set to earn ₦3, 527,022.61 monthly.

REASON FOR 300% INCREMENT

INFLATION

Senator Monguno Said the judicial workers needed the increase due to the country current inflation rate. 

JUDICIAL WORKERS INTEGRITY

The senator further added that the salary increment will help officers focus on their works without having financial problems which will prompts integrity.

NIGERIANS REACTION

This bill has drawn a lot of reaction from Nigerians, ishowneck a user on twitter now x expresses the FG neglect on Minimum wage but rather went ahead to increase the judicial salaries.

Another user ogamayor  accuse those who think the demanded minimum wage by labour union was too much.

Xandy accuses the bill of not benefiting the Nigerian average citizen.

Francis Anita also a user on twitter asked why FG did not use the same energy on minimum wage.

Recall The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) went on strike recently after the Federal Government (FG) failed to meet their proposed minimum wage.
