The Federal Government of Nigeria has on Monday suggested that social media users would have some personal details linked to their social media accounts. This was released by the information technology office NITDA, Yesterday in Abuja, that details such as personal phone number, email address, date of birth, and other personal details to be linked to their accounts.

According to the NITDA, the suggested move is made to curb, Fitch, interrogate and bring offenders to book. It was said by the Government parastatal that if a felony message is created outside Nigeria, the first Nigerian to create such information will be adjudged to be the first creator.

However, the government denies trampling on the constitutional rights of Nigerians which guarantees free speech of the citizens but is putting all necessary actions to put an end to the spread of harmful information.

Recalled that, in June 2021 the Federal Government banned Twitter over the allegation that the platform is being used to promote harmful information. Though the ban was later lifted in early January 2022. The government also claimed the suggested code got contributions from experts but did not disclose the organization’s contribution.
