The Lagos State Government has announced its partnership with Huawei Technologies to enhance traffic management in the state. As part of the partnership, Huawei will launch four new Intelligence Transport System (ITS) across the state.

More so, the state’s commissioner for transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi confirmed the partnership on Thursday, during a press briefing. He explained that the ITS will enhance the existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras including other Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices.

According to the commissioner, the collaboration also comes with newly launched ITS sites. This strategic innovation encompasses checkpoint sites for speed monitoring and e-police sites for monitoring traffic violations.

Furthermore, he said it marked a significant step towards improving traffic management and road safety in the state. Likewise, Osiyemi explained that the four new ITS are strategically located in different parts of Lagos.

He revealed that the checkpoint sites are already at Alapere, with a speed limit of 80km/h, and at Nitel on Mobolaji Anthony, with a speed limit of 60km/h. Also, the commissioner added that e-police sites are in place at Allen Avenue Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road.

Additionally, he asserted that these sites are equipped with high-definition cameras that can detect traffic violations. Osiyemi said the system will curb vices like including running red lights, improper lane usage, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving.

Recall that in 2024, the Lagos State Government launched the Lagos Transportation Policy. The legislation is a comprehensive framework for the development and regulation of the transportation sector in the state.

The state government rolled out the comprehensive plan over fifteen years, dividing it into different phases. According to the program, the introduction of the ITS will surface in the first phase which is within two years.

This further confirmed Osiyemi’s affirmation of the Lagos state government’s effort to modernize its transport infrastructure, while addressing growing challenges faced by traffic congestion.
